Create a Meaningful Keepsake
A Simple, Beautiful Christmas Art Project for Home or Classroom

One of my very favorite Christmas projects every year is our Watercolor Nativity Craft. It’s peaceful, meaningful, and simple enough for even young learners—yet the finished product turns out beautiful enough to save forever. If your family (or classroom!) loves hands-on art that points little hearts back to Jesus, this project will be such a sweet addition to your December rhythm.
This keepsake craft is now available in my Teachers Pay Teachers shop, complete with printable nativity silhouettes, instructions, student directions, and sample photos so you can create it with confidence.
Why I Love This Christmas Craft
In the middle of holiday busyness, it feels so grounding to slow down with the kids and paint. Watercolors naturally calm the room, and the silhouette of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus makes such a stunning contrast against a dark December sky. It’s simple—but powerful.
This project works beautifully as:
- A homeschool Christmas art lesson
- A Sunday school or church classroom craft
- A Christian school bulletin board project
- A Christmas Eve service activity
- An Advent morning basket rotation
- A meaningful keepsake gift for grandparents
And because the nativity silhouette is a printable cutout, even little hands can participate without needing to draw the figures themselves.

How the Craft Works
The steps are incredibly easy and low-prep:

1. Paint the night sky
Kids use blue and black watercolors to create a blended night sky. Some add stars, some add a moon, some just love mixing colors—and it all works. I find that using a Crayola 16-color watercolor set is perfect for completing this project, though a standard 8-color set would also work just fine.

2. Let it fully dry
This is a great time for a read-aloud. A few of our favorite picture books for this craft include The First Christmas: The Bible’s Nativity Story, ‘Twas the Day Before Christmas in Bethlehem Town, and The Christmas Blessing.

3. Cut & glue the nativity silhouette
The printable includes a simple, bold silhouette of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus in a creche. Kids cut it out (or you can prep it ahead of time) and glue it onto their night sky. There are two different options for nativity silhouettes, with one being slightly easier to cut out. To add some pizzazz, feel free to splatter white paint into the sky before adding the nativity to add a starry effect. Alternately, outline the nativity silhouette with a silver paint pen to set it apart or even add a little bit of glitter to the Christmas Star.

4. Display your masterpiece!
These look absolutely stunning hung in a row, clipped on a string, framed, or added to a classroom bulletin board.

A Christ-Centered Craft They’ll Remember
As you paint and create together, you’re giving your children more than an art project—you’re giving them a moment to reflect on the beauty of Jesus’ birth. It’s a simple way to keep our homes and classrooms centered on Him during a season that can so easily become chaotic.
I hope this watercolor nativity becomes a beloved tradition in your home too.
Let me know if you try it—I’d love to see your creations!
