Picture Books That Celebrate Gratitude and God’s Goodness
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year to slow down, reflect on God’s blessings, and fill our hearts and homes with gratitude. In our homeschool, we use stories as a way to center our hearts on why we give thanks—not just what we’re thankful for. These beautiful picture books remind little ones that Thanksgiving is about God’s goodness, provision, and faithfulness through every season. If you’re searching for beautiful Christian Thanksgiving books for kids, this list will help your family focus on gratitude and God’s blessings this season.
Here are a few of our favorite Thanksgiving books that we read year after year to remind us not only what we are thankful for, but to whom we give thanks and why:

1. Pumpkin Patch Blessings by Kim Washburn – This is the perfect book for toddlers, helping them to see God’s goodness all around them. Children are reminded that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). The rhyming text makes it fun and easy to read, and the illustrations are adorable.

2. Three Young Pilgrims by Cheryl Harness – This book features beautiful, classic illustrations and follows three real Pilgrim children as they journey on the Mayflower and help build the new colony at Plymouth. This book brings history to life through rich artwork and accurate details to help children imagine what faith, courage, and perseverance looked like in 1620.

3. The First Thanksgiving by Jean Craighead George – This story tells the story of the Pilgrims’ difficult voyage and first year of life in Plymouth as well as of their friendship with the Wampanoag people. The text is factual but warm, helping kids understand why faith and gratitude were at the heart of the very first Thanksgiving celebration. Use this book to start discussions about history, gratitude, and God’s provision.

4. Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas – This incredible, true story of Squanto shows how God worked through his trials to bring hope and help to the Pilgrims. Captured as a boy and taken overseas, Squanto eventually returned home—just in time to assist the struggling settlers. The author tells this story with reverence and grace, reminding children that even when life seems unfair, God uses our story for His purpose.

5. The Berenstain Bears Thanksgiving Blessings by Mike Berenstain – The Berenstain bears are a hit in our home, and this story is no exception. As the bear family celebrates Thanksgiving at Grizzly Gramps and Gran’s house, they learn what the holiday is really about – thankging God for His many blessings and remembering His goodness.

6. The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving by Ann McGovern – This book is an oldie but a goodie. Ann McGovern tells the story of the Mayflower voyage, the Pilgrims’ struggles, and the first feast of thanksgiving shared with their Native American friends. The book keeps a strong focus on the Pilgrims’ faith and perseverance, making it a perfect choice for younger readers learning how gratitude grows even in difficult times.

7. Pilgrims of Plymouth by Susan E. Goodman – Vivid photos and simple text introduce children to what daily life was really like for the pilgrims. Children can see how they worked, played, worshiped, and thanked God for His provision as they started their new lives in Plymouth. This historical account of Pilgrim’s lives is a perfect accompaniment for units about life during colonial times.

8. Thanksgiving Graces by Mark Kimball Moulton – I love rhyming books becuase they’re fun and easy to read. This one features a family gathered around the table to share a Thanskgiving meal and each other’s company. This book goes further and reminds children that this holiday is about more than just a meal – it’s about love, family, and giving thanks to God for His blessings. This book has a warm way of making the reader feel right at home.

9. The Berenstain Bears Thankful for Family by Stan & Jan Berenstain – I told you we love the Berenstain Bears! This is a classic book for little ones discussing all of the things they are thankful for. While it lacks directly praising God for all of the blessings bestowed upon the family, it is easy to do as you discuss this heartwarming book with your child.

10. Give Thanks to the Lord by Karma Wilson – I think I saved the best for last! Karma Wilson is one of my all-time favorite authors, so it’s no surprise to me that this book made my top 10 list. It was inspired by Psalm 92 and follows a family as they prepare for Thanksgiving while offering praise to God for the beauty of His word and His steadfast love.
Giving Thanks with Grateful Hearts
These stories remind us that Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday—it’s a posture of the heart. Whether you’re learning about the Pilgrims, giving thanks for daily blessings, or reading Scripture together around the table, these books help children see that every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17). Grab a cozy blanket, light a candle, and snuggle up with the ones you love while reading one of these Thanksgiving treasures. May they help your family focus on God’s faithfulness and fill your home with gratitude this season.
